Here we are human being, once again never enough of our insatiable palette to satisfying our hunger needs. Those Dodo birds we used to drive to extinction sounds familiar? Recent featured cover story from Greenpeace mentioned another that may potentially become our next target. Fish – once one of our foremost-staple food source is running short. Thus came the question, what have we become?
This marine creature has all along been part of our diet. It used to be so abundant in supplies that we labeled it as infinite source of protein – the best that Earth has got to offer. China alone consumed more fish than a total of European nations combined. Irresponsible fishing is ignorance, being at the most top of the food-chain, we can do better than that.
Worse came along better technologies, now we can catch up to 4 times the amount of loads, traveled further and into deeper waters compared to previous. Higher population led to an increasing number of mouth to be fed. On the hand, fish in the wild cannot keep up with our ferocious demands. Poor fish. Such is the imbalance of our ecosystem here.
Well the least we can do is to stop such ignorance and instead advocate for change and sustainability.
Commercially, this sustainability can be achieved through freeing other endangered marine species like dolphins and sea-turtles that were netted along vessels, not harvesting juveniles and enough with the shark-fining, please. On the individual-level, we can reverse the situation by stopping sharks-fin consumption, thus reducing demand which gradually reduces the need to supply. These are just some of the simple ways that we can do on our part to make sustainability happen.
To be honest, our ecosystem is messed up now. And as time is ticking away, we are creeping, inching closer to that tipping point where the process become irreversible. Its not too late for change, but time is running out, fast. Let’s go green and save our precious Gaia.
